Sumitomo Electric Wiring Systems, Inc. (SEWS) Bowling Green Corporate Office sponsored a classroom at Warren Elementary through the Newspaper in Education (NIE) program, in partnership with the Bowling Green Daily News. Each class receives newspapers as well as a special kids section with activities and lessons called “Kid Scoop”. The program gives companies and organizations the chance to help students learn by using newspapers in the classroom.

They are highly motivating materials that can be used to teach math, science, grammar, character education, reading comprehension, writing strategies, problem solving and so much more.” — Vicki Whiting, former third grade teacher and founder of Kid Scoop.
Bowling Green HR associate, Andrea Sherrill, and Bowling Green HR intern Megan Shefchik, visited their sponsored classroom, Mrs. Colter’s 4th grade class. During the visit these SEWS associates met the students in the class and spent time with them during their newspaper lesson. The students were very gracious for the opportunity to use a newspaper in the classroom because some of them do not receive a newspaper at home.
“We are thrilled to be able to support our local schools in this way. Having access to a newspaper in the classroom not only improves students’ reading comprehension and test scores, but also their understanding of current events in and around their local community. Newspapers contain something of interest for every student, reinforcing positive attitudes towards reading” says BG associate, Andrea Sherrill.
